Astrophytum asterias 'Ooibo Kabuto'
Astrophytum asterias 'Ooibo Kabuto is a Japanese-bred selection of the sea-urchin cactus Astrophytum asterias, prized for its unusually large, prominent woolly areoles. Where a typical kabuto carries neat rows of small white flecks and modest areoles, 'Ooibo Kabuto' pushes the areoles into oversized, prominent tufts of white wool that stand out boldly along the ribs — the Japanese name (from ibo, "wart" or "bump") refers to these enlarged, protruding areoles.
Description
'Ooibo Kabuto' shares the flat, spineless, disc-shaped body of the parent species, divided into the classic eight (sometimes fewer or more) low ribs. Its defining feature is the areoles: instead of the small, evenly spaced woolly dots seen on ordinary asterias, this line produces enlarged, densely woolly areoles that swell into conspicuous raised white tufts. These oversized areoles sit like a row of buttons down each rib, and on well-grown plants they can dominate the look of the whole cactus.
The body colour and white flecking (the fine speckling of trichome tufts across the epidermis) vary from plant to plant, since 'Ooibo Kabuto' describes a selected trait rather than a single clone. It is frequently combined with other asterias selections — for example crossed into 'Super Kabuto' lines — so seedlings sold under this name can range from lightly to heavily flecked. As with all asterias, the flowers emerge from the woolly crown of the plant and are yellow, often with a red-orange throat.
Cultivation
Grow 'Ooibo Kabuto' exactly as you would the parent species; see Astrophytum asterias for full details. In short: give it bright light with a little shade from the harshest afternoon sun, a fast-draining mineral-rich mix (see Soil and potting mix), and water sparingly, letting the soil dry out completely between drinks and keeping the plant dry and cool through winter dormancy (see Watering). Protect it from frost.
Because the enlarged, wool-packed areoles hold moisture and debris more readily than a plain body, take extra care that water and grit do not sit in the crown — good airflow and careful watering from below (or at the soil, not over the plant) help keep the woolly areoles clean and rot-free.
