Astrophytum asterias 'Super Kabuto'

Astrophytum asterias' 'Super Kabuto is the flagship cultivar of the sand dollar cactus, Astrophytum asterias. A Japanese selection prized for its unusually large, dense white woolly flecks that coalesce into bold speckled and marbled patterns spreading across the entire flattened disc, it is one of the most popular and influential cultivars in the Astrophytum hobby.

Description

Like all forms of Astrophytum asterias, 'Super Kabuto' is a low, spineless, disc-shaped cactus divided into (typically) eight broad, flat ribs, with woolly areoles running down the centre of each rib. What sets it apart from ordinary asterias is the flecking: instead of scattered pinpoints of white trichome tufts, 'Super Kabuto' carries large, plush flecks that merge into flowing bands, swirls, and clouds of white across the green body. The best plants can appear almost entirely frosted, with the underlying green showing through only in thin channels.

The "Super Kabuto" name (from the Japanese kabuto, a samurai helmet the flattened body is thought to resemble) refers to this heavy, coalescing flecking rather than to any single clonal line. Selection over many generations has produced a spectrum of related looks — from dense uniform frosting to bold marbled patterns — all sold under the same cultivar banner. Flowers are the usual asterias type: yellow with a red-orange throat, borne from the woolly crown in the growing season.

Because 'Super Kabuto' is a selected strain rather than a single clone, seed-grown plants vary. Growers rogue out weakly flecked seedlings and breed on from the best, so quality tracks the parentage and the grower's eye.

Cultivation

Care is as for the parent species; see Astrophytum asterias for full detail. In brief, give bright light with some protection from the most intense afternoon sun, a fast-draining mineral soil, and cautious watering — let the mix dry fully between soakings and keep the plant dry and cool through winter dormancy. Protect from frost.

One point specific to heavily flecked plants: the dense white trichomes and the flattened, ground-hugging body make 'Super Kabuto' slow and prone to marking, so err on the side of restraint with water and feed. Good light keeps the body tight and encourages the strongest flecking; too little light produces a paler, more open-grown plant with less character.

Propagation

'Super Kabuto' is grown principally from seed, selecting for the heaviest, most attractive flecking in each generation. Seedlings grow slowly, and grafting onto a vigorous stock is commonly used to speed them along and to bring good clones to flowering size sooner, after which established plants are often grown back on their own roots.
