Crassula 'Baby's Necklace'

From CactiExchange Wiki

Crassula 'Baby's Necklace is a charming dwarf hybrid Crassula whose tiny, tightly stacked leaves are pressed together along the stem like beads threaded on a string, with each pair blushing rosy red at the tips in bright light. The result is a low, trailing chain of "beads" that gives the plant its name and makes it a favourite for small pots, dishes and windowsill collections.

Description

'Baby's Necklace' produces slender stems densely packed with small, rounded to slightly triangular leaves arranged in opposite, closely stacked pairs. Each successive pair sits snugly against the last, so the stem reads as a continuous string of green beads. Under strong light and cooler conditions the leaf margins and tips flush a warm reddish-pink, deepening the necklace effect; in lower light the plant stays a plain fresh green and the pairs space out and stretch.

The plant stays compact, branching from the base and eventually trailing or leaning as the beaded stems lengthen. Like many small Crassula, it may throw up small, pale star-shaped flowers under the right seasonal cues, though it is grown almost entirely for its distinctive stacked foliage. It is often sold alongside the closely related Crassula 'Baby's Surprise and shares the beaded look of stacked-leaf species such as Crassula rupestris and Crassula perforata, which sit behind its parentage.

Cultivation

Care follows the parent Crassula species; treat it as you would any small stacked-leaf Crassula. Give it plenty of bright light — a few hours of direct sun encourages tight beading and the signature red edges, while too little light causes the pairs to space apart and lose their necklace form. Grow it in a fast-draining, mostly mineral mix in a small, snug pot, and water only when the soil has dried out, easing off through the cool, dark months. See Watering and Repotting for general technique.

Because the beaded stems are brittle and top-heavy, the plant benefits from a shallow pot and careful handling; the same fragility makes it very easy to propagate.

Propagation

'Baby's Necklace' propagates readily from stem cuttings. Snap or cut off a length of beaded stem, let the wound callus for a day or two, and lay or insert it on barely moist mineral mix; roots form quickly and each piece soon builds into a new plant. Small offsets will often root on their own as well. See Propagation — offsets for related technique.
